CONSTANTINA
The single plait that hung down her back swung wildly as she ran around the playground. “She looks just like her father did. I should have brought baby pictures.”
“Yeah, I would have liked to see those.”
Sitting at the picnic table across from Dannity, I felt remorse that I couldn’t hide. “You know it was not easy for me to do what I did because I missed out on my own son’s childhood.”
She searched my eyes for sincerity and I never wavered. It was important that I gain her trust.
“I can blame everybody for what happened, but I still had the ability to reach out before I did. I guess it was okay for me to allow her to think my gay best friend was her father. I think she picked up on it when he started borrowing my handbags.”
I chuckled. “Children are very smart, Dannity. I always wondered if my son had any idea that his mother was the woman pretending to just be a good friend of his aunt. I guess there was no maternal attraction because he was told so many terrible things about me.”
She rubbed her palms on her jeans. “What’s done is done now. I embarrassed the hell out of myself, but I should have known that he would move on. I mean, he is gorgeous and he has a big heart. What woman wouldn’t want a man like that?”
I nervously twisted diamond band on my ring finger. “I spent my whole life trying to find a man to replace his father. I traveled all over the world and was adored by many men, but none of them came close to Dorian. No one in the world knows better than myself how it feels to sacrifice love for family.” I held my hand up. “I waited my whole life for this ring. I am over forty, and just now getting to be with the love of my life. I am worried about how Delano will take the news. If he will feel betrayed because I waited until he is grown to do what I should have done before he was born.”
She gave me a small smile as Delainey ran up to the table and grabbed her around the waist. “Mama, I missed you. Who is this? She is pretty.”
I gave her a small wave, which she graciously returned. Dannity looked up, searching my face for an explanation.
“Hi, Delainey.”
She placed her hands on her small hips and cocked her head to the side. “How you know my name?”
I cleared my throat, feeling slightly embarrassed. “I am your dad’s mother.”
Her eyes lit up with excitement as she ran over to my side of the picnic table. “You are my granny!” she squealed, hugging me tightly.
I hugged her back as Dannity looked on, trying to control her emotions every bit as hard as I was trying to control mine.
“You are white though,” she observed, pulling away.
“I am Italian, bambina, and you are too.”
“Hey, that’s not my name,” she pouted playfully.
